One of my favorite gifts to give my friends and family - and one that they always ask for more of! - are fancy homemade bath salts, especially with dried flowers. They are so simple to make, absolutely adorable, and so luxurious to use!
If I’m giving them away with holiday gifts, I’ll usually make a bigger batch and pull together a collection of small jars to give out to everyone. Then I’ll write out the ingredients on a tag and tie it around the jar with a piece of twine and viola! A delightful little gift with a personal touch.
Where to Get Epsom Salts
You should be able to easily find Epsom salts at your usual grocery and department stores, but sometimes you can also buy them in bulk at health food stores or local zero waste shops. Buying in bulk is a great option because you can often fill your own containers or opt to use a paper bag instead, limiting your plastic use.
If you aren’t sure where to find zero waste shops near you, Litterless has an awesome directory of bulk shopping organized by state and city.
If you do buy pre-packed Epsom salts, try to go for the bigger bags and stock up all at once, which is another way to limit the packaging we have to throw out.
Where to Find Dried Flowers
When you’re using flowers in your diy projects and recipes, always consider where they are coming from. For example, if you use regular flowers picked up at the grocery store, you’re also bringing home all the pesticides those flowers might have been subject to. So when you use them in DIY beauty projects, you’re also exposing your skin to those pesticides.
A good rule of thumb is to go for food grade florals, or choose them from a trusted source where you know that no pesticides or other harmful treatments were used.
I can usually find a good variety of organic and food grade herbs and dried flowers or teas in the bulk section of my local health food store. You can also reach out to friends and neighbors, or grow your own!
I buy my dried hibiscus, which I use in many DIY projects, from the bulk section at my local PCC Market.
Finding Jars for Bath Salts
I think fancy bath salts, especially with dried flowers or herbs, deserve to be seen! I opt for clear glass jars - the one I used in these photos is a 4 oz KORKEN Jar from IKEA.
In the past, I’ve also picked up small glass jars with cork toppers and filled them with bath salts, giving away the “bath shots” with Christmas gifts!
My favorite places to find jars for DIY projects, though, are thrift stores. There is usually a large collection of jars to pick from of all shapes and sizes and for great prices.
Ingredients
½ cup of Epsom salts
¼ cup baking soda
10 drops of rose otto or rose essential oils

Combine the Epsom salts and baking in a bowl, and stir until thoroughly combined.
Add 10-15 drops of pure rose essential oils, and mix well.
Stir in the dried flowers.
Transfer to your chosen jar.
